Limelight by Amy Poeppel is a look at the allure of both New York City and Broadway. The following book club questions will have spoilers so if you haven’t read the novel yet, check out my preview and review first.
Not many books can make me literally laugh out loud. But this one did. Poeppel’s characters sound real and authentic. The inner thoughts of Allison are so entertaining as she navigates this bizarre but exciting new life.
It was interesting to read about a middle-aged couple deciding to make such a big change for their families and themselves. I’m sure there are people that have the urge to suddenly just move away from the suburbs to the city so it’s completely believable. And the hard adjustments at the beginning rang true as well. In a sense, this was a coming-of-age story for Allison. Through the most random of chance, she found a new calling: assistant to bratty teenagers. Or in other words, serving as a mother figure by teaching life lessons to lost teenagers.

- Allison is the one to really push her family to move from Dallas to New York City. Why was she so insistent?
- The only one really happy in the beginning is Allison’s husband. If you were Allison, how do you think you would have handled such a big move and transition?
- What was your impression of the first interaction between Allison and Carter? Were you surprised she felt the need to help him even though he’s a spoiled and rude teenager? Why do you think she did?
- Almost anyone else would have given up on Carter. What does it say about Allison that she was willing to stick it out with him?
- A good chunk of the book is dedicated to Broadway and the show Limelight. What did you think about the behind-the-scenes look at putting on a show?
- Let’s talk a bit about Carter. How did he change from when we meet him to the end of the story?
- Do you think Allison is a relatable character?
- Did you like the ending? Why or why not?
- What are some of the key themes that stick out to you?
