Cookies are small text files a website stores in your browser so it can remember something between pages or visits. Sites also use similar tools, like your browser’s local storage and tracking pixels. This page lists the ones Book Club Chat and its partners use and explains how to control them. Essential
These keep the site working and secure, and can’t be switched off here.
- Security
- Cloudflare, which delivers and protects the site, may set a short-lived cookie to tell people from bots. It lasts about 30 minutes.
Preferences
These only exist because of something you did, and only remember that choice.
- Comments
- When you leave a comment, WordPress can save your name and email in cookies so you don’t have to type them again next time. They last about a year, and are only set when you comment.
- Newsletter note
- The printable questions page shows a short newsletter note. When you close it, or click a newsletter Subscribe button anywhere on the site, the site remembers that in your browser’s local storage so it doesn’t keep asking, for between a week and 90 days. It never leaves your device.
Analytics
- Google Analytics
- Google Analytics cookies count visits and tell new visitors from returning ones, so the site can see which posts are read. They last up to 2 years. In the EU, the UK and Switzerland they are only set once you agree in the consent prompt. Anywhere, you can opt out with Google’s opt-out browser add-on.
Advertising
The ads on this site are managed by Mediavine. Mediavine and its advertising partners use cookies, pixels and similar tools to show ads, limit how often you see the same one, measure performance, prevent fraud, and, unless you opt out, personalize ads based on your interests. Mediavine may also run its Grow tools (share and save buttons). The names and lifetimes of these cookies are set by each partner; Mediavine’s partner list links to each one’s policy.
Affiliate Links and Embedded Content
- Affiliate links
- When you click a link to Amazon or Bookshop.org, that store sets its own cookies on its site so a purchase can be credited to this one. That is how the site earns a commission, at no extra cost to you. See the Affiliate Disclosure.
- Embedded content
- Some pages include content from other sites, such as Bookshop.org book widgets and the Substack sign-up form on the newsletter page. Those sites can set their own cookies under their own policies.
Your Choices
- EU, UK and Swiss visitors
- Mediavine asks for your consent before advertising or analytics cookies are set. You can change your choice at any time through the same prompt.
- US visitors
- Use the “Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information” link Mediavine shows on the site’s pages with ads, or turn on Global Privacy Control in your browser, to opt out of personalized ads.
- Industry opt-outs
- The Digital Advertising Alliance, the Network Advertising Initiative and, in Europe, Your Online Choices let you opt out of interest-based ads from participating companies.
- Your browser
- Every browser can block or delete cookies and clear local storage; look under its privacy settings. Blocking every cookie can break parts of some sites.
Opting out of personalized ads doesn’t remove ads. You’ll still see them, just not ones based on your interests.
