Q&A with Christie Curry, Author of Love Between Lectures

Christie Curry spends her days as a data analyst and her nights writing rom-coms, dreaming up characters to bring to life (and hilarious ways to torment them). She has a master’s degree in public health and taught human sexuality for several years, giving her a wealth of inspiration and amusing anecdotes for her novels. A Southern California native, she currently lives in Los Angeles with her husband, daughter, and a tiny dictator masquerading as a tuxedo cat.

In Love Between Lectures, sparks fly when a human sexuality professor is paired up with her former childhood crush to organize a sexual health event, until the university’s biggest donors—spearheaded by her conservative parents—oppose.

Let’s get to know Christie as she talks favorite books, inspiration behind her novel, her TBR and more!

What are some of your favorite novels?

I read across all genres, but I particularly love rom coms and thrillers. Some of my favorites are The Paradise Problem by Christina Lauren, You Deserve Each Other by Sarah Hogle, and Bridget Jones’s Diary by Helen Fielding. The voice and the humor are what really set those apart for me. One of my top reads of all time is Savannah Royals by Lindsay Barrett. It’s a genre blend of romantic suspense + heist, and it’s so, so good. Lindsay’s prose is absolutely amazing, and she’s such an expert storyteller. She also wrote The Dravenhearst Brides which is a gothic romance that I highly recommend.

When did you know you wanted to become an author?

I’ve always enjoyed writing. I wrote a lot of poems in jr. high and high school, and I took a creative writing class in college, but I never thought I’d be an actual novelist. I started writing seriously in 2021, and while I always hoped I’d land a book deal, the fact that I have an actual book coming out in a few months is surreal.

Can you tell us the inspiration behind Love Between the Lectures?

This book is an homage to my time teaching human sexuality at a university in Southern California. During an outreach event, I was passing out condoms and doing demonstrations on a plastic penis model. A student was asking questions, but I didn’t realize they were a reporter for the campus newspaper. The article came out the next day, and there I was, front and center, holding a dildo. Two years ago, a former coworker was cleaning out her desk and found the newspaper. She sent me a photo and it sparked the inspiration for Love Between the Lectures!

What aspects do you like best about the romance genre?

The yearning. The tension. Stolen glances, goosebumps that appear from an accidental brush against the other person. And most of all, I love the HEA. For me, reading is the perfect escape from reality. It’s a chance to delve into a different world for a few stolen moments, and while I’m there, I like things to end on a hopeful note.

What was your favorite chapter or scene to write?

Well, my absolute favorite scene to write was in chapter 18, where [REDACTED FOR SPOILERS]. I also *really* loved the second hand-cringe in chapter 15 when [REDACTED FOR SPOILERS]. And I absolutely loved writing their meet cute in chapter one. Honestly, I had a blast with the whole book.

What are you currently reading and what’s on your TBR (to be read) list?

I’m currently reading It’s All in Your Head by Sabina Nordqvist and absolutely loving it. It’s sharp and witty and I love the representation in it. Sabina’s voice is amazing and she’s now an auto-buy author for me. I have hundreds of books on my TBR, but some of the ones at the top of my list are Love, Witches, and Wahala by Christine Cowan, The Grace Year by Kim Liggett, and Warrior Princess Assassin by Brigid Kemmerer.
