Julie Clark is the author of The Ghostwriter, which is available now.
Julie is the New York Times bestselling author of The Lies I Tell and The Last Flight, both of which were also #1 international bestsellers and have been translated into more than twenty-five languages. She lives in Los Angeles with her family and a goldendoodle with poor impulse control.
Her latest, The Ghostwriter, is her first murder mystery. A family is shattered when two teenage siblings are found dead in their home. The only surviving sibling could never shake the accusations that he was involved. Now 50 years later, his only child might be the one to find out the truth about what happened that night, as he’s finally ready to talk.
Let’s get to know Julie as she talks favorite novels, a preview of The Ghostwriter, her TBR and more!
What are some of your favorite novels?
Anything by Barbara Kingsolver, Jodi Picoult, Anna Quindlan or Tana French! Two MUST reads are also: The Red Tent by Anita Diamant and The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger.
When did you know you wanted to become an author?
When I was very young, I used to write stories for family members as gifts. They didn’t always cry at the right parts (sometimes they laughed instead), but they were what got me thinking about writing for an audience.
What drew you to writing suspense stories?
The ideas that were coming to me drew me to suspense. The Last Flight didn’t start out as a suspense novel until I saw that’s what the story needed it to be. I haven’t looked back since! I love writing characters who are lying, cheating, running for their lives, making drugs, murdering people etc.
What can readers expect from The Ghostwriter?
Like my other books, The Ghostwriter is character driven. My characters don’t only solve an external problem, but they work internally to complete a significant emotional arc. You can also expect multiple narrators, two strong female lead characters, and dual timelines — the present as well as 1975.
What was your favorite part or chapter to write?
My favorite parts to write were the 1975 chapters. Especially Poppy’s POV. She is someone I wish I could know in real life, and I am very hopeful that I know several young people who are as strong and determined as she is.
What are you currently reading and what’s on your TBR (to be read) list?
My reading buddy and I plan on reading Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro. (We are definitely late to the party). I just finished A Mother’s Guide to the Apocalypse by Hollie Overton, and LOVED it. That’s forthcoming in August 2025. I also just finished Karma Brown’s first horror book, called Mother is Watching. It’s excellent and truly creepy. I believe it will be releasing in September 2025.
